San Francisco's Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market, now in its permanent home at the San Francisco Ferry Building, is a unique opportunity for people living in the City to buy freshly picked, organic produce directly from small family-operated farms. This farmer's market is particularly special because the communities surrounding San Francisco are some of the richest agricultural areas in the United States and are home to some of the most enthusiastic and successful organic farmers in California. During the peak season (April - November), the Market attracts over100 farmers and vendors. But even during the off-peak season (December - March), you'll find 50-60 farmers and vendors offering seasonal fresh produce and related value-added products.
About this Website
This website features personal profiles of farmers who regularly attend
the Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market. I have selected only those farmers and vendors who
operate family-run businesses and who don't have their own retail establishments or don't
sell mainly through retail shops. The profiles highlight their personal background, a
description of their operations, types of produce and seasonal availability as well as
some of my own observations. I have also spotlighted my favorite vendors as well as some
of their recipes. Check in frequently for new profiles.
Recipes for the Produce You Buy at
the Market
For recipes that I've developed using the produce I buy at this Market,
check out Ditty's Sunday Supper. For additional
cooking inspirations, a new book entitled "Fresh from the
Farmers' Market", by Janet Fletcher who is a staff writer for the San Francisco
Chronicle and noted cookbook author, is a must!
Ditty's Personal Favorites
Although all the produce at the Market is fresh and tasty, I buy
certain produce from my favorite vendors. For my personal favorites, take a look
at Ditty's Picks - Top of the Market.
